Snoring & Sleep Apnoea Treatment
Chronic snoring can have a debilitating effect on both you and the people around you.
Snoring is caused by the soft tissues at the back of the throat collapsing during sleep and partially blocking the airway. When we breathe this creates vibrations caused by the blocked airway, which results in the sleep depriving sound. Over 3.8 million Australians snore, and this places a strain on a large percentage of families across the country.
A symptom of a larger issue
Snoring can be an indicator of an underlying condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (often referred to as OSA). Sufferers of obstructive sleep apnoea experience disturbed breathing, and this causes patients to wake from sleep hundreds of times a night. The length and quality of sleep you receive each night can greatly influence your overall health, and has been associated with heart disease, high blood pressure, stroke and psychiatric well-being.
At our Gold Coast dental practice, we can treat snoring and sleep apnoea with oral appliance therapy.
This treatment involves custom fabricated devices that are worn during sleep to properly align your bite and prevent your jaw from dropping back during sleep. Oral appliances can actively prevent the soft tissues in the back of your throat from collapsing, which is the cause of both snoring and sleep apnoea.
To Note: Any dental procedure carries risks which also may depend on your general health. This will be discussed with you prior to any dental intervention.
Before proceeding you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner such as your dentist or your doctor.
